The Peter A. Beachy House at 238 Forest Avenue began as a Gothic cottage known as the Fargo House, which banker Peter A. Beachy hired Frank Lloyd Wright to 'remodel' in 1906. Wright's remodel went so far that the original structure survives only in fragments in the basement; what stands today, sited at right angles to the street to catch southern light, is a nearly complete Prairie School replacement built just after Wright returned from a trip to Japan.

the building

The old house in the basement. Wright's 1906 remodel obliterated the interior of the original Gothic cottage that stood on the site. The only surviving traces of that earlier building, known as the Fargo House, are found in the Beachy House's basement.

Seven gables. The house is composed around seven gables, part of the roofline massing Wright used to rebuild the property from the ground up while still resting on part of the cottage's original foundation.

the style

Though filed under Prairie School, the Beachy House carries visible traces of Wright's recent trip to Japan in its exterior detailing, one of several Wright projects from this period to absorb that influence.
