This Oak Park store, designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White in the Art Deco style, was one of only two suburban locations — alongside Evanston — that Marshall Field & Company chose when it expanded outside the Loop, built as a miniature replica of the company's Chicago flagship. It served as a Marshall Field's until 1986, when owner BATUS Inc. closed it as outdated and too costly to run.
the building
A miniature Loop flagship. The building is a scaled-down replica of the Marshall Field and Company Building in the Loop, and a twin of the company's Evanston store — matching suburban stand-ins for the downtown original.
the style
Art Deco (c. 1925–1940): Jazz-age glamour: towers stepping back as they rise, strong vertical lines, and zigzag or sunburst ornament.
More on Art Decosignificance
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 1988. After Marshall Field's departure, the building housed a Borders bookstore until 2011, and today holds offices along with a Barnes & Noble location.
