El Greco Apartments is a twelve-unit, two-story Spanish Colonial Revival building at 817-823 North Hayworth Avenue, designed by architect Clara Bertram Humphrey and modeled after the Toledo, Spain home of the painter El Greco. Built in 1929 as one of the original buildings in Westwood Village, it housed film figures including Erich von Stroheim, Michael Curtiz, and Joel McCrea. Facing demolition for a condominium project in the 1980s, it was saved by tenant protests and moved to the Fairfax district, where it was converted into low-income senior housing.

the building

Modeled on El Greco's house. Architect Clara Bertram Humphrey based the design on the home of the painter El Greco in Toledo, Spain, giving the building its name along with its red tile roof and brick detailing.

the style

Built 1929-30 in the Spanish-Mediterranean mode common to 1920s Los Angeles, the El Greco is credited with strongly influencing the architectural style of Westwood Village's original buildings.
