Completed in 1950, the Rockefeller Guest House at 242 East 52nd Street was Philip Johnson's only private residence built in New York City. Blanchette Rockefeller, married to John D. Rockefeller III, commissioned it in 1948 as a separate building to house her modern art collection, since her husband did not share her appreciation for it.

The facade. A symmetrical two-story facade pairs dark red Flemish-bond brick at ground level with six translucent glass panels above, divided by four steel bars.

The garden. Johnson placed an outdoor garden with a pool between the living/dining room facing the street and a rear bedroom, separated from both rooms by fully glazed walls.

the architect

Philip Johnson designed the guest house in 1948-1950; it remains notable as the only private residence he built in New York City.
