Trinity Church was built in 1877 in Back Bay for an Episcopal parish founded in 1733, replacing an earlier building lost in the Great Boston Fire of 1872. Designed by Henry Hobson Richardson under the direction of Rector Phillips Brooks, it became the originating, textbook exemplar of Richardsonian Romanesque, a style that took its name from this and Richardson's other work. Its Copley Square facade made the church a defining commission of Richardson's career and a National Historic Landmark.
