The Harrison P. Young House at 334 N. Kenilworth Avenue began as an 1870s home designed by William E. Coman, then was extensively remodeled in 1895 by a young Frank Lloyd Wright for the same client, Harrison P. Young. The remodel pulled the house back an additional 16 feet from the street and added a porch overhanging the driveway, early marks of the ideas Wright was still developing.
the building
Coman's house, Wright's remodel. Wright reworked William E. Coman's 1870s design in 1895, setting the home 16 feet further back from the street and adding a porch that overhangs the driveway.
A steeply pitched roof. The house's steeply pitched roof is closely identified with Wright's other early work, though the overall design is atypical among his Oak Park houses, reflecting the lingering influence of his first teacher, Joseph Silsbee.
the architect
Frank Lloyd Wright remodeled the Young House in 1895, early in his career and while still working under the influence of his first teacher, Joseph Silsbee. The design sits somewhat apart from his other early Oak Park work even as its steep roofline recalls it.
